This is just a little list of gorgeous, funny, clever women that I put together with the help of my friends (again!). I simply wanted to answer the question, who’s showing us how to dress? Who are our Style Heroes now? I warn you I may gush.
Hands down the most nominated Style Hero among The Friends is Claudia Winkleman. This is an old picture, but I think it sums up why people love her so. Who else turns up at showbiz events looking like this? She is as mad as a box of frogs. Even though she gets to wear glorious frocks and perfect shoes on Strictly’, she gives just the right amount of not-a-sh*t about what she looks like. Her fringe, tan, eyeliner and sense of humour all add up to make Claudia the girl we would all love to be mates with.
Jo Whiley is top of my personal list. I have long admired her brilliant, classy, rock chick mum look. She is as fit as a butcher’s dog, and is never fully dressed without a smile. She has a passion for music, and a depth of knowledge in her field, that you just cannot fake. And now she’s a rock n roll gardener too. Be still my beating heart.
I love this woman, and think we all should. She looks more amazingly beautiful now than she ever has (the silk shirts on The Fall? Steady on…) and has a career that is only just warming up. Gillian Anderson was calling out pay inequality and the under representation of women in Hollywood, long before the current zeitgeist. She would 100% pull off the first female James Bond.
Emma Thompson is number one on my list of fantasy dinner party guests. This is obviously for her brain and jokes, but she has also been looking spectacularly good recently. Great hair, figure, clothes and accessories. Proof, if it were needed, that whatever age you are you can still find your Best Outfit Ever. I am not worthy of listing her career highlights, but let’s just say that Nanny McPhee makes me really happy. Oh, and that scene in Love Actually when she elevates the whole film in 30 seconds? I’m done.
What can I say that hasn’t been said before? Yes, she has access to all the best clothes, hair and make up on the planet, but still no one pulls it off quite like she does. Cate doesn’t play it straight or tone it down as she gets older. In her own words, “it’s about women who feel free to wear what they want, when they want and how they want to wear it”.
June would have been in the same school year as me, and seems to have been on and off TV as we’ve grown up (T4 to Loose Women). She’s out of the park gorgeous, but there’s also something direct about her personal style that makes her compelling. She is a laugh, and honest, and has never dumbed down (an MBE at 29). I wish I could look half as smart. A proper ambitious hard worker, and a brilliant example.

Hold on tight, I think the gushing is about to hit another level. I LOVE this woman. She writes utterly brilliantly about life as a young, and getting-older, woman. She’s a journalist, novelist and all round inspiring life guru. A genius, comic, feminist master of Twitter. She refuses to play the game of posing sensibly for photos, and has given up high heels for life. Yes Caitlin, they are uncomfortable.
Davina was nominated by Helen, who says that she doesn’t really look to celebrities for style inspiration, preferring Instagrammers. So DM is on our list because of her “attitude and glow”, rather than her wardrobe. She is an undeniable ball of energy who has worked at the top of her game for years. And I met her in a lift once.
The gossip in me has been pretty fascinated by Louise Redknapp this past year. Having been a full time mum myself, I suppose that I can relate to looking around and sometimes thinking “I’m not quite sure how I got here, and whether it is enough?” From a style point of view she was never the classic WAG, often choosing more directional shapes and designs. A cool girl, I look forward to seeing what she gets up to in future.
This is a nomination that forced me to think outside the box, because her personal style clothes-wise is pretty far from my own! But my god you have to admit that she is smoking hot. Nominated for her body shape (respect) and flawless make up. J-Lo’s not going anywhere.
What do you think of my list? It’s not definitive, I’m thinking of more all the time. How about Jennifer Connelly, or Jennifer Aniston, Madonna, Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss? Add your own nominations below and we can talk……
